Phinizy Swamp - October 19, 2024
On a nice Saturday morning 25 people set out to hike the trails in Phinizy swamp. We were not sure what to expect because it was barely two weeks after the hurricane but before going our hike leader made sure the park was open. Some of the trails were still closed but Debbie led us around those that were open, and we managed a very nice 4-mile hike. We observed many birds and there was a nice display of blooming swamp sunflowers on many of the ponds. We also got a firsthand look at how the park controls weeds in the ponds. They use two very very noisy air machines to knock them down! It was interesting at first, but the noise became annoying later on.
Langley Pond March 2024
We had great weather for this hike. The trail was much improved and much better defined than the last time we hiked in this area. Afterwards some stayed to view the improvements to the rowing facilities and the children’s play area. Thank you, Laurie and Rita, for showing us a good time.
Congaree National Park February 17,2024
The weather was cooperative, but the water level was not. A section of the board walk trail was underwater, so we had to back track rather than go thru the water. However, we did walk all portions of the trail that were not flooded. Most of the boardwalk was actually high and dry. This is surely a special place and is even more interesting when the water is high. We were able to see several of the large champion trees.
Hollow Creek Trail, January 21, 2024
Twenty-two people turned out for this 5-mile hike. The hike was originally scheduled for 9.30 am but because it was windy and only 25 degrees F. at that time everyone was glad to postpone the hike to 1.30 pm when conditions had markedly improved. It was a long hike but everyone made it. The trail was in good shape thanks to the work of trail captains, Jim Pierce, Jim Parker, and
Dick Spaeth, all of whom attended the hike.

New Years Day 2024 Hike
We had a big turnout for this annual hike to bring in the New Year. Everyone enjoyed the 2-mile hike along Woodside’s Oakman Lake trail and, afterwards, the cookies that everyone brought. Thanks to Marion Pierce, Jackie LeFebvre and Jim LeFebvre who organized the picnic table for the cookie feast.
